Glossary of Elevator Terms

Machine Room-Less Elevators:

Machine Room-Less (MRL) elevators are modern elevator systems that do not require a separate machine room to house the motor and control equipment. Instead, the machinery is compactly installed within the elevator shaft or on top of the hoistway. MRL elevators are commonly used in mid-rise residential and commercial buildings where space efficiency, energy savings, and modern design are priorities.

Traction Elevator:

A traction elevator operates using steel ropes or belts that pass over a traction sheave connected to an electric motor. The counterweight system helps balance the car’s load, allowing smooth vertical movement. The main advantages of traction elevators are their energy efficiency, high speed, and suitability for taller buildings. However, they are more expensive to install and maintain than hydraulic elevators and require precise alignment and regular upkeep.

Hydraulic Elevator:

Hydraulic elevators use a piston and fluid-driven system to raise and lower the elevator car. They are ideal for low-rise buildings, such as residential homes, small offices, hospitals, and shopping centers, where travel height is limited. These elevators are known for their smooth operation and lower initial cost but are generally slower and less energy-efficient than traction or MRL systems.

Automatic Rescue Device (ARD):

An Automatic Rescue Device (ARD) is a safety system designed to bring the elevator car to the nearest floor and open the doors automatically in case of a power failure. It runs on a backup power source, such as a battery or UPS, ensuring that passengers are not trapped during emergencies. The ARD system enhances passenger safety and reliability, making it a standard feature in modern elevators.
